Welcome to 'Artists Illuminated'. A series where we turn the spotlight on our favorite holiday market artists and makers. Today we are featuring South Boston Holiday Market maker: Amisha Design
Amisha Design began in 2015 as Amisha Imports, a year-long pop-up shop in the SoWa Art & Design District of Boston. The success of the hand block printed textiles inspired founder Michelle Silvi to expand on her own line of prints for accessories, apparel and home decor under the Amisha label (Amisha translates to beautiful in Hindi).
Through Amisha, Michelle's goal is to offer a unique range of textile designs, fusing the ancient craft of block printing with a modern aesthetic. Michelle travels to Jaipur, India several times per year to work with a small community of artisans who hand block print and sew all of the pieces. Jaipur is home to a centuries old culture of traditional block printing and natural dying. It's truly an amazing and beautiful city!
In addition to working with the artisans to keep the indigenous craft of block printing alive and thriving, Michelle is an advocate of the slow fashion movement. After working in the corporate fashion industry for 15+ years, Michelle's goal is to bring increased awareness and transparency to the source of our products and how they're made.
